A giant elephant seal has made Fish Hoek beach his temporal home and has already attracted attention from hundreds of locals. Despite lots of people walking around him, the animal named Buffel remains calm as he is on moulting period, Animal Ocean founder Steve Benjamin said in a blog post.
“During the moulting period they do not eat. The process can take up to a month. It has no fear of humans or dogs. Its species does not ever encounter either and they have never developed a fear. It more likely sees us as big penguins” he said.
The seal has allegedly traveled around 2100km in a journey from Marion Island to Cape town and still remains very healthy, Benjamin commented.
He advised residents to avoid close contacts with Buffel and also strongly urged them not to chase the seal back to the water.
