The South African Home Affairs Department has asked citizens to pick up their identity cards (IDs) until next weekend. It applies to those South Africans, who have applied for ID and are awaiting their issuance.
By the current moment, it is known, that only in the Western Cape about 23,000 people remained without identity cards, in Bellville and Cape Town are more than 3,500 unregistered identity cards.
According to the department’s spokesperson, work hours in many offices will be extended:
“Our offices will be open from 8 am until 5 pm over the weekend to assist as many people as possible who may need assistance. Our assistance will include handing out IDs and assisting people with temporary IDs so that they can register to vote,” said Siya Qoza.
