Over 1,6 thousand road users died during the 2018/2019 festive season, Minister of Transport Blade Nzimande revealed on Wednesday. During holiday period department registered a total amount of 1 286 lethal car accidents with the highest numbers in KwaZulu-Natal — 328 deaths in 267 crashes.
Nzimande added human factors were the most dominant in those accident:
“We remain concerned about the incalcitrant attitude of our road users as the statistics show that human factors account for 90% of contributory factors to fatal crashes compared to vehicle crashes that contributed 4% while road and environmental factors contributed 6%,”
The majority of casualties applies to motorists, whereas only 36% of the festive season fatalities were passengers and only 2% — pedestrians.
