Members of North West education department were speechless when they saw armed guards at the doors of Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke.
Earlier, this building in the province has become a place where a scandal broke: a picture of black pupils siting separately from the white ones went viral, providing serious discussions around the Internet and, especially, in mass media.
Protests started following the picture incident and the Laerskool management decided to take safety measures. However, the education department condemned the directorate’s decision to invite guards carrying weapons to the classrooms, saying it had been made against the school policies.
“All our schools are gun-free. I have made it clear to the governing body that no one will be allowed to carry a gun in our school. We are currently negotiating with the SGB (school governing body) and police about the safety of the school,” subdistrict manager in the area Gopolang Valtyn said on Monday.
Whereas agreeing to the guards’ presence, Valtyn strongly urged them to remove guns.
