Cambridge mayor dies from cardiac arrest after scuba dive in KZN

The mayor of Cambridge in the UK have died after a scuba diving session in SA.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) commander Kevin Fourie, Nigel Gawthrope, 61, who is also known as an experienced underwater photographer, was on the charter boat on Friday when he felt unwell.

Vehicle crew attempted to provide first aid to the major but the measures brought no results. The emergency unit as well as eThekwini Surf Lifesaving Club lifeguards and police arrived after Gawthrope went into cardiac arrest.

“Despite extensive CPR efforts by paramedics, the man was sadly declared deceased.”, Fourie said. He also commended the crew for their efforts.

Cambridge council’s representatives sent condolences to Gawthrope’s wife and other family members, saying it was a tragedy to the city. In a statement made on Sunday they also confirmed that the exact cause of Gawthrope’s death has yet to be confirmed.
