Pretoria commuter train service partially collapsed because of cable thieves

At the moment only one railroad can be used on a way from Mabopane and Garankuwa stations in Pretoria suburb to the city center. Train operator Metrorail says other routes are now partially closed following massive cable thefts.

Commuters always have an alternative and use shuttle trains and buses launched by Metrorail. Engineers and other experts have already been working on the scene, the officials said. They are to replace the cable and restore railway communications between suburban areas in the near future.

The operator urges residents to be patient until the end of the repairs:

“Metrorail management would like to appeal to all commuters not to assault or harass its personnel as and when experiencing challenges within the rail operational environment because this affects their emotional well-being and compromises safety of everyone.”
