Police officers seized approximately R23m worth of rhino horns at OR Tambo International Airport. According to a statement made by the South African Revenue Services’ Sicelo Mkosi, the total weight of the discovery was about 116kg.
The horns were found during K9 searches at several cargo warehouses near the airport. Police dogs stopped near packages destined for the Middle East reacting positively to the shipments to Dubai.
“Upon physical examination the consignment was found to be containing door mats as well as cut and laminated ply wood. Further examination revealed over 30 pieces of rhino horn wrapped in plastic (and) concealed under the laminated wood pieces, “ Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.
