Mzwinila defends high water tariffs

The public had many questions concerning increase in accounts for water use.

So answering a question of one of Member of Parliament for Jwaneng-Mabutsane Shawn Nthaile Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services told about billing system used by (WUC).

We remind that The Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) is a parastatal organization wholly owned by the Botswana Government. The organization is engaged in many spheres, including planning, construction, operation, processing, maintenance and distribution of water resources in the city centers of the country and other areas which were authorized by the government of Botswana and also supply with water of Department of water resources and local authorities.

Kefentse Mzwinila told that the system which is used in Water Utilities Corporation is considered very exact and reliable. He noted that this system is checked at the international level and is used by many suppliers of housing and communal services for management of accounts of clients and use a billing system.

Mzwinila also said that many factors affect correctness of drawing of accounts, for example a mistake of clients or a problem with the counter. He specified the moment of the fact that users need to monitor control of leak of water or incorrect operation of counters.

“The system tracks and keeps history of all transactions undertaken in it in real time and the transaction history is permanently kept, which is important in addressing queries. Only authorized users have secure access to specific transactions related to their duties,” – he declared.

Also there was the question about ways of solution this problem with raised payment for water was asked him. He answered that WUC does not use special systems for tracking of leaks in network yet and urges all to report about such accidents immediately.
